Flying Car

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

I do not usually comment about technology other than web development software and such, however I could not resist. In the article below, featured on the csmonitor.com talks about a new vehicle that may change the way we travel.

Now, seriously this scares me. Why because I already have to deal with float planes taking off from the Lake and flying over my house. While I trust most of the Lake Plane pilots, even though I have seen a couple fly into the local watering hole on the lake, put back a few, then fly off, I am not too worried. Can you imagine being on the interstate and the car in the lane next to you takes off? This is a little freaky. I wonder if these vehicles will be able to just take off from any old road or if they will HAVE to use the airport, then drive home.

Anyways, it is interesting that these planes can fly on regular unleaded and can fit right in the garage. I would bet if these things take off, commuting to work will change forever. The tricky part will be finding a gap in the road to land without hitting someone. I imagine that this vehicle will open up pandora’s box, however it is great to see technology moving forward.

The name of the company that built this is called Terrafugia, and this is the website, stop by and check it out: http://www.terrafugia.com/. Great website design by the way.

My next wish is to see a vehicle that does not depend on tires, however can hover on the road over snow, ice, and rain without spinning out. Maybe in a few years to come.

Break the Bank by Breaking an iPad

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

3 days ago,  a video came out on YouTube.com of some guys dropping and then smashing a brand new iPad with a baseball bat. They bought it at a local Best Buy and then immediately took it out in the parking lot and smashed it. There is a Best Buy employee in the video taking pictures of the event. To most people they would be completely shocked by this, however I saw a business opportunity in this. People could not understand why a person would smash a $400+ brand new peice of technology just for the sake of doing it. The guy who organized this wanted to be the first person who did it for the record. I don’t think he was only doing that. You see, in the last 3 days, this video has created over 800,000 page views on YouTube with another ton of sites, like this one, linking directly to it. If you look closely on the YouTube page, there are ads being served. These ads are bringing in a LOT of money for YouTube. I would bet that the guys are going to be receiving royalties from YouTube in the future. If they are not expecting that, then they will be losing out on thousands of dollars in ad revenue. Someone is making a LOT of money from this. I would really like to know if the guy had that in mind before smashing this new iPad and if he was in kahoots with any corporation for doing such a stunt. The other reason….he is a spoiled kid who has no respect for money and has not ever been in a bad economic situation in his life. Well, if he makes money, good for him, he is smarter and more creative than I am. If he did it just for a prank, shame on him for wasting Dad’s hard earned cash.

Firefox Not Coming to a Windows Mobile Browser Soon

After reading this article:

Windows Halts Work on Windows Mobile Browser by Ina Fried

I was saddened to hear that Mozilla is halting their production on a Windows mobile browser. I am a huge fan of Firefox, especially all of the great plug ins and add-ons that are available. Firefox is one of the best open source browsers on the market. I was hoping that some of the same add-ons would be available on the mobile version as well. Unfortunately due to some ridiculous politics, Mozilla will be only making a browser for the Android operating system. I guess I will just have to live with Internet Explorer for now or Opera Mini. There are a few other mobile browsers that are pretty cool and available for Windows MobileSkyfire, Opera Mini, and Bolt are all options other than Internet Explorer. Skyfire is my favorite for now, since it has a lot of cool features available. I believe that it is always good to have a few alternate browsers available.

This article blew my mind away. I can only image what may come next. Changing channels on a TV by just thinking about it, talk about being lazy!

Wireless back up for your graphics and other files

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Okay, I work on a laptop. I like my laptop because it is wireless. I like sitting back and watching Hockey and working on my laptop, nuff said. My wife loves her laptop. Call us an old couple into technology, however after a hard day of work we like to sit in front of the TV and play on our laptops. Anyways, recently my wife lost a bunch of data. Yeah it really sucks, and she has to do a lot of catch up! Why is it gone, well, only because the IT department did not ask us before they re-imaged the drive, and because she did not have an easy way to back up her files. Easy meaning a way to write to another drive without having to get up off of the couch, walk downstairs, turn on the external hard drive, blah blah blah. We need to be able to back stuff up on the fly with a push of the button while we keep g and twitterin like birds! How can we do this without being a total IT nut? My solution is to buy a router/print server. Some of the new ones I have seen have USB ports on the back so that ou can hook up to a printer Make sure to get one with a NAT feature. Basically you want the ability to write to the drive. In many cases this has been established through FTP protocol across the network. I know, it is not easy as having a physical drive show up in your windows explorer, however for under $200 you can have a nice external hard drive and a nice router that writes to the hard drive using wireless technology. I am looking in the ASUS RT-N13U. This router gives the ability to do this sort of thing, as well as the ability to print, which is very nice. Anyways I will be ordering and testing this soon. it is a new product and I think that it will do the job, especially for under $60 at Newegg.com. PS,make sure to get at least a 500 GIG hard-drive. Space is soo cheap these days!
